Why Does God Allow Suffering?

The classic argument against God usually goes something like this, "If there was a God how could he allow pain and suffering? How could a loving God take my child away? Why was I born in the circumstance that I was? Why does God allow war?" These and many others form together to show that many times our sadness pulls away from God. However in these times God is waiting for us to run to him. It is in opposition that we understand joy. One prophet of old explains why God allows opposition in our lives.

For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my firstborn in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.
